The British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) has launched a new UK‑wide citizen science project, Birds in Greenspaces, and local people are invited to take part this spring.
Running from 1st April to 30th June 2026, the survey aims to build a better understanding of how birds use publicly accessible greenspaces such as parks, playing fields, village greens and cemeteries. These places are important not only for wildlife, but also for people’s wellbeing – particularly in towns and cities.
Taking part is simple and open to all experience levels. Volunteers are asked to visit one or more local greenspaces and record which birds they see or hear, and how many, during a short walk. Surveys typically take 30–60 minutes and can be recorded using the new Birds in Greenspaces mobile app or online later via a computer. Even a single visit can provide valuable data.
The information collected will help the BTO understand which greenspaces are most important for birds and support future guidance on how these sites can be managed to benefit both wildlife and people.
