We’re pleased to announce a significant review and update to the Guidance for the Selection of Sites of Nature Conservation Importance (SNCIs), reflecting our ongoing commitment to protecting and enhancing Surrey’s most valued local wildlife and geological sites.
These updates ensure that our selection process remains robust, evidence-based, and aligned with the latest ecological standards and conservation priorities. Key changes include:
- Refinements to site selection criteria to better reflect ecological value and local distinctiveness
- Updated appendices with clearer guidance and improved data references
- Enhanced transparency in how sites are assessed and designated
These revisions were developed collaboratively with our partners and stakeholders, ensuring they are both scientifically sound and practically applicable. The work was carried out by SWT Ecology Services, with funding and support from Surrey County Council, Surrey Wildlife Trust, and the Surrey Biodiversity Information Centre.
We encourage all partners, landowners, and interested parties to review the updated documents and share feedback.
